Pivotal Scenes 1&2, Book quest 3

One of the most important scenes in the book (I think) is when the boys light the signal fire. It is a start of the failure of their government, and it contains allot of symbols important to the book. As the boys scampered after Jack, Ralph slowly let the conch fall from his hands. The conch is a symbol for their democratic government, and Ralph letting it fall symbolizes that he has given up on the system, and runs to follow jack. Piggy who still clings to the conch retrieves it and clambers up the hill after Ralph. to light the fire the steal Piggy's glasses, they symbol intellectual endeavor, and they used it to start of huge fire on the island. In this scene they are using science, and curiosity as a weapon. Piggy symbolizes the link to the adult world (he is the Superego) and them taking his glasses, is breaking their link a little bit more.
The next scene I chose is when Jack is hunting the pig alone in the jungle he feels something watching him, creeping up on him. This symbolizes his fear of savagery, which he feels himself giving into. He represents the Id, and the beats he feels is his instinct, he fears turning savage, but yet he craves a society where he has power, or where there are no rules where he is free to do what he likes. H feels it getting closer and closer but he can’t give into it because he fears it. When he puts on the mask before going hunting again, he feels free of social restrictions, and he leaves the signal fire and goes hunting.
